Newborn Session Guide
Congratulations to you!!! Thank you for allowing me the amazing and rewarding job of photographing your new baby in his/her first few days of life. I am truly honoured to be able to capture this incredible time and I look forward to getting to know you and your sweet baby!
This newborn session guide will help you prepare for your newborn session.
What to bring
Your newborn session will take 3 to 4 hours, this is a great chance for you to relax, whether it be watching the t.v, with your mobile device or a book. It is important that you bring a dummy for settling even if you don’t generally use one. If your baby doesn’t easily settle on the day, the dummy will be used as a last resort.
How to prepare
For the baby, clean away flaky skin and eye mucus with a wash cloth.
If your baby has any band-aids on the foot, thigh, etc please remove them as soon as you possibly can to allow the imprint marks to disappear.
Do not change your baby’s diet the day before or during the session, changes in baby’s diet may contribute to fussiness. Continue to feed your baby how you normally do (breast-feed, formula-feed, or both). Bring plenty of bottles! Your baby will need to feed more often during the session than they normally do.
Before the shoot, please feed baby 2-3 hours prior and do your best to keep baby awake. Try giving a bath, tickle their toes, and let them fuss for a little bit. By the time they get to the studio, they will be ready for a feed and a sleep.
At the session
Be sure to burp baby really well after the feeding. Wind can make a sleepy, happy baby into an uncomfortable one in seconds.
Be patient. If your baby is fussy or alert, do not stress out. Your newborn can sense your anxiety and we want to keep the environment as mellow as possible. Settling newborns is what I love to do, not many babies can get through my sleepy spells and still be awake, but if they are still awake, then tucking them up beautifully in a gorgeous wrap is the next plan and they will usually fall asleep. I like to do most of the settling with your baby in the studio, I find they settle quicker because I do not smell of milk and due to my experience with newborns I’ve got all settling techniques mastered.
Be prepared for messes of all kinds. Babies do not care where, when and who they pee, poo, spit up or vomit on. That is why I will be dressed in comfy clothing, and I recommend you to bring spare clothing.
It is hot in the studio for your baby’s comfort, I recommend that you wear layers, which are easily removed as needed.
As the session can take up to 4 hours, I provide beverages (water, tea and coffee) and some yummy cookies, lollies and other snacks, feel free to bring more food with you if you wish.
Same day viewing
I offer same-day viewing, what does this mean? Well, after I’ve taken all the photos I need, I will load them straight onto the computer and you will be able to sit down and view all the photos from the session on the t.v. My clients are loving this feature of my sessions, you get to see a great number of images and you choose your favourites. Your favourite images are then edited and placed onto one of my custom USBs.
Your newborn session will include parent photos and sibling(s) photos, the following information will help with what to wear/bring.
A subtle application of makeup can soften your skin and accent your facial features. Natural looking fake lashes can really flatter your eyes.
Please wear comfortable bottoms and a black top with no logos or patterns/stripes, long or 3/4-sleeve tops are the most flattering. Rest assured, I aim to photograph using flattering angles and lighting. Be sure your nails are tidy and clean, if you wear nail polish make it a light colour or french polish as your hands will make their way into the images and brightly coloured nails can be quite distracting.
Be freshly shaved, trim your beard, sideburns, moustache or goatee. Make sure your hands & nails are clean.
Please wear plain black v-neck t-shirt with no logos or patterns/stripes with a pair of jeans/shorts or comfortable bottoms. Best not to wear a collared shirt as the collar can get in the way in some poses.
Including older brother/sister(s) in your newborn’s portrait is very special.
Clean! – clean nails, clean hair, clean feet, freshly brushed teeth, and wipe away eye mucus and snotty noses. The cleaner the child, the better their photos will turn out. It is perfectly okay to bring bribes to the photo session – some crackers, snacks or other treats.
Please wear a snug-fitting top or a dress in a neutral colour. Preferably no nail polish.
A pair of jeans/shorts and a plain light/neutral coloured t-shirt preferably no collar.
Please bring items to keep sibling(s) entertained. I do have a t.v in the studio for the kids channel as well as a toy box and if weather permits, you can pop across the road to the park. I also have a fully fenced front garden to kick a ball around, this is viewable from the studio.
I have many different props in the studio for you to choose from. I’ve set up an online gallery for your convenience that allows you to view the props and select your favourite two props that you would like to use for your newborn session. I will have them both set up prior to your arrival for the session.
To select your props please follow the link below, select your two favourite props by clicking on the heart icon, you will be asked for your email address. Once you have made your selections, simply click favourites (sometimes depending on your device you need to click into your favourite photos list) find & click on the paper plane icon in the top right corner and send to photographer. In the message section, just let me know the name in which the session has been booked, then, press send.
